Hello, May -
The Greater Omaha area experienced the devastation of a tornado this past week. Many families, homes, pets, and personal belongings were impacted. There is so much collective and vicarious grief amongst our community. There is sadness and loss for those directly impacted, and remorse and helplessness for those who were not. It’s in these moments that communities must come together to support one another and rebuild. For anyone looking to donate or volunteer, KETV has compiled a list of ways to help.
During life's unpredictable moments of desolation– whether it be natural disaster, heartbreak, sickness, or a family feud – I am reminded of the importance of spirituality. To me, spirituality is separate from religion - it’s something that anyone can have, regardless of their belief in God or not. It’s about the interconnectedness of all things and beings - from humans, to trees, to animals - we are all on this shared earth together, impacting one another. To keep this sentiment alive and present, I personally must lean on a daily spiritual practice. It provides me with perspective, peace, and meaning. It’s a way I can not only consistently show up for myself, but also remember the bigger perspectives I need amidst life’s hardships.
Every morning, I do the same exact thing; no matter the weather and no matter where in the world I find myself. Upon awakening (and before checking my phone), I immediately do a 15 minute stretching/breathing series. During this time I repeat the same intention over and over...
Love... be in my head and in my understanding. Love... be in my eyes and in my looking. Love... be in my mouth and in my speaking. Love... be in my heart and in my thinking. I surrender my will and my life to you and your care. Lead me, guide me, show me the way, the truth, the light. Take from me the need to control myself, others, and outcomes and instill in me peace, gratitude, patience, and truth.”
Then I read the daily meditation out of Melody Beattie’s The Language of Letting Go, which always feels so timely and intentionally written for that specific day. Finally, I take our puppy Ollie on a one-mile walk. I used to listen to podcasts while I did this, then decided to just be present and fully absorbent of nature’s sounds and sights. After this, I am a better person. I am more attuned to myself, my higher power, and my purpose; which prepares me to face the day ahead with love at the center.
Do you have a daily spiritual practice? I would love to hear about it.
May the upcoming month be abundant in love for you,
Lucy
